Come and play

Maui has some the the best surfing on the planet.

Surfers never like to broadcast their favorite spots and neither do we. There is however a welcoming community of surfers and more than enough warm waves to go around. Come out here and talk to some of the locals about where to go. Even if you have never surfed before, learning is all about wave count and we have 365 days of warm water to get that wave count up. With south swells in the summer and north swells in the winter, there is always at least a little ripple somewhere on the island. Keep in mind that surfing can be a dangerous sport. Always go out at your own pace and ability level.

Maui favorite styles

Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP)

Stand up paddleboarding is a great way to enjoy the ocean with or without waves. Tour the reefs at Olowalu or catch a small wave at Launiupoko.

Longboard

The longboard is by far the go-to instrument of choice for the majority of Maui surfers. You will rarely find a break without at least one 9’ board. It wasn’t until the Surfers from Australia came to Maui that the short board was popularized.

Down wind SUP

12-17 foot boards and their riders further out to sea are riding “bumps”. Down wind paddle boarding takes a special breed and a lot of know-how.

Nose rider

The nose rider is similar to the long board and traditionally might have been the same, but today has a bit of a spoon like opening on the underside of the nose of the board. This enables the surfer to stand out on the front of the board and “Nose-Ride”. You might see someone hang five or even ten if it is a good wave.

Foil

It may be the future and it may be all you ever want to do after you try it once. The foil’s humble beginnings have exploded into every situation imaginable.

Shortboard

This is one of the favorites for the youngsters. Tricks and faster riding are the hallmarks of this style and board.

Pick it up

Pack it in pack it out. In the surf, I always pick up whatever plastic floaties I find and bring them to the nearest garbage.
